Trophic Energy Transfer Calculator
Trophic Energy Transfer Calculator: Why Food Chains Have Limits
Only a small fraction of the energy at one trophic level makes it to the next — most is lost as heat or remains locked in biomass that never gets eaten. This calculator applies the classic ecological transfer efficiency rule (commonly around 10%) across however many levels you specify.
The Formula
Energy at Level = Producer Energy × (Efficiency)Levels
Worked Example
Producers hold 10,000 units of energy, transferred through 3 trophic levels at 10% efficiency each.
Energy = 10,000 × (0.1)3 = 10 units remaining at the top level
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the energy available at the producer level.
- Enter the number of trophic level transfers to the level you're interested in.
- Optionally adjust the transfer efficiency (10% is the ecological rule of thumb).
- Click Calculate to get the energy remaining at that level.
