Carrying capacity (K) is the maximum population size an environment can sustain indefinitely given its available resources - once a population approaches K, growth slows as competition for the limiting resource intensifies.

K = Total Resource Available / Resource Needed Per Individual

Example

100,000 units of a resource, with each individual needing 25 units:

K = 100,000 / 25 = 4,000 individuals

How Populations Approach K

Real populations typically show rapid growth while resources are abundant relative to population size, then level off in an S-shaped (logistic) curve as they near carrying capacity. This model assumes a single limiting resource - real ecosystems frequently have multiple interacting limiting factors (food, water, nesting space, predation pressure) that can each independently cap population size at different levels.

Practical Applications

Wildlife managers use carrying capacity estimates to set hunting quotas, plan habitat restoration projects, and predict how a population will respond to habitat loss or resource changes - exceeding carrying capacity for an extended period typically leads to resource depletion, increased mortality, and a population correction back toward or below K.
