Every item sold through Amazon's marketplace incurs a referral fee - a percentage of the sale price that varies by product category, separate from any FBA fulfillment fees.
Referral Fee = Sale Price x Referral Fee%
Net After Fee = Sale Price - Referral Fee
Example
A $50 sale at a 15% referral fee rate:
Referral Fee = $50 x 15% = $7.50 → Net Remaining = $42.50
Fee Rates Vary Significantly by Category
Amazon's referral fee percentage is category-specific - some categories carry rates around 8%, while others run 15-17% or higher, and certain categories have minimum fee floors regardless of sale price. Sellers need to look up their specific category's current rate rather than assuming a flat percentage across their entire catalog.
Referral Fee vs. FBA Fee
This referral fee is entirely separate from Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fees, which cover picking, packing, and shipping costs when using Amazon's fulfillment network - accurate net profit estimation for an Amazon seller needs to account for both fee types together, not just one or the other.
