Return Rate Calculator

Returns Are a Cost That Hides Inside Your Sales Numbers

A sale isn't final the moment it's placed — returns quietly claw back revenue, restocking labor, and sometimes the product's resale value entirely, especially for categories like apparel where fit and appearance drive purchase decisions. Return rate turns that leakage into a single tracked percentage, which is what makes it possible to spot a problem product or a defective batch before it erodes a quarter's profit.

The Formula

Return Rate % = (Units Returned ÷ Units Sold) × 100

Both figures should cover the same period and, ideally, the same product or SKU — mixing time windows (this month's returns against last quarter's sales) produces a misleading rate.

Why Return Rate Matters

  • Product quality signals — a SKU with a return rate well above the store average is often flagging a sizing, description, or quality issue worth investigating directly.
  • Category benchmarking — return rates vary enormously by category (apparel and footwear run far higher than, say, consumables), so tracking rate by category is more useful than a single storewide number.
  • Reverse logistics cost planning — return shipping, restocking, and refurbishing costs all scale with return rate, making it a direct input into operational budgeting.

Figures computed directly from the calculator's own formula to illustrate how the rate scales — actual acceptable return rate benchmarks vary widely by product category.
