Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) Calculator
GMV is the total dollar value of merchandise sold through a store or marketplace over a period - a common top-line volume metric distinct from the platform's own actual fee-based revenue.
GMV = Units Sold x Average Selling Price
Platform Revenue = GMV x Platform Fee%
Example
1,000 units sold at an average price of $45, with a 10% platform fee:
GMV = 1,000 x $45 = $45,000 → Platform Revenue = $45,000 x 10% = $4,500
GMV vs. Actual Revenue
GMV reflects total transaction volume flowing through a platform, not the platform's own earnings - for a marketplace like Etsy, Amazon Marketplace, or a multi-vendor Shopify setup, GMV can be many times larger than actual platform revenue, since the platform typically only earns a small fee percentage while sellers keep the rest. This distinction matters when evaluating a marketplace business, since GMV growth doesn't automatically translate proportionally into revenue growth.
