Isolating One Source of Emissions at a Time

Carbon footprint estimates often get muddied by trying to account for everything at once. This calculator takes the opposite approach: pick a single source — household electricity, vehicle mileage, or air travel — and get a clean annual CO2 estimate for that source alone, using a published emission factor specific to it. That makes it easy to isolate which part of a routine, a commute versus a flight versus home energy use, actually carries the most weight.

The Formula

Electricity: CO2 = kWh/month × 12 × 0.42 kg CO2/kWh
Vehicle: CO2 = Miles Driven/year × 0.404 kg CO2/mile
Flight: CO2 = Flight Miles/year × 0.115 kg CO2/passenger-mile

Each factor is a commonly cited blended average — 0.42 kg CO2/kWh for the US grid, 0.404 kg CO2/mile for an average passenger vehicle, and 0.115 kg CO2 per passenger-mile blending short- and long-haul flights. Actual figures vary by regional grid mix, vehicle efficiency, and flight class.

Where a Single-Source Estimate Is Useful

  • Isolating impact of a specific habit — testing "what if I drove 3,000 fewer miles this year" is cleaner with a dedicated per-source calculation than a blended household total.
  • Before/after comparisons — switching to a more efficient appliance or an EV is easiest to evaluate one input at a time.
  • Education — showing how much CO2 a single long flight produces, isolated from everything else, tends to land harder than a combined annual number.
