Ecological Footprint Calculator
How Many Earths Would It Take?
Ecological footprint measurement expresses a lifestyle's demand on nature in a single physical unit — global hectares, the amount of biologically productive land and water needed to support it — then compares that demand against the roughly 1.6 global hectares of biocapacity available per person on Earth. The result is an intuitive if sobering figure: how many planets would be required if everyone lived the same way.
The Formula
Transportation = (Car Miles/year × 0.0003) + (Flights/year × 0.15)
Housing = Home Size (sqft) × 0.0004
Energy = Energy Usage (kWh/year) × 0.0002
Earths Needed = Total Footprint ÷ 1.6 gha/person
This is a simplified, illustrative model rather than the official Global Footprint Network methodology, which incorporates far more categories and region-specific data. Diet contributes a flat baseline that ranges from 0.6 gha/year for a vegan diet up to 1.9 gha/year for a meat-heavy diet.
Why This Framing Is Useful
- Comparing lifestyle levers — seeing diet, transportation, housing, and energy side by side in the same unit shows which category actually has the biggest footprint for a given person, rather than assuming.
- Sustainability education — the "how many Earths" framing is a widely used communication device precisely because it converts an abstract land-use metric into something immediately graspable.
- Tracking change over time — reducing flights or shifting diet and re-running the numbers quantifies the effect of a specific lifestyle change on overall footprint.
Footprint by Diet Type
| Diet type | Total footprint (gha/year) | Earths needed |
|---|---|---|
| Vegan | 6.22 | 3.89 |
| Vegetarian | 6.52 | 4.07 |
| Average diet | 6.92 | 4.32 |
| Meat-heavy | 7.52 | 4.70 |
How to Use This Calculator
- Select your Diet Type (Vegan, Vegetarian, Average, or Meat-Heavy).
- Enter Car Miles per Year and Flights per Year.
- Enter Home Size in square feet and Energy Usage in kWh per year.
- Select Calculate to get your total footprint in global hectares and Earths needed.
