Important Caveats
These are widely cited approximate figures from environmental science education materials, not precise laboratory measurements - actual degradation time varies enormously based on environmental conditions (UV/sunlight exposure, moisture, temperature, and microbial activity). Landfill conditions in particular often slow degradation far below open-air estimates, since buried waste is deprived of the oxygen and light exposure that speeds decomposition above ground - some biodegradable-seeming materials have been found essentially intact and readable after decades in landfill excavation studies.
