Water bills report a single monthly total, but that number is really the sum of several very different habits — showers, toilet flushes, laundry, dishwashing, and everything else that runs through a faucet. Breaking it apart by fixture is what turns a vague "we should use less water" into a specific, actionable target, because each category responds to a different fix.
The Formula
Toilets = Household Size × Flushes/Person/Day × 1.6 gal/flush
Laundry = (Loads/Week × 25 gal) ÷ 7
Dishwasher = (Loads/Week × 6 gal) ÷ 7
Misc = Household Size × 10 gal/day
Total = Sum of all five categories
The per-fixture rates (2.1 gallons/minute for an efficient showerhead, 1.6 gallons/flush for a standard low-flow toilet, 25 gallons per laundry load, 6 gallons per dishwasher load) are standard EPA WaterSense average figures.
