Global average e-waste generation has been estimated at several kilograms per person per year, though generation rates vary enormously between high-income countries (much higher per-capita generation, tied to greater electronics ownership and shorter replacement cycles) and lower-income regions.

The Formal vs. Informal Recycling Gap

A meaningful share of global e-waste is formally collected and recycled through regulated programs, while much of the rest is informally processed or exported internationally, often under poorly regulated conditions that can expose workers to hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium found in electronic components. Improving formal e-waste collection infrastructure remains a major policy focus in many regions.
