Formula

  1. Total Rainfall Volume (L) = Roof Area (m²) x Rainfall Depth (mm)
  2. Retained Volume = Total Volume x Retention%
  3. Runoff Volume = Total Volume - Retained Volume

Example

100 m² roof, 20mm rainfall event, 65% retention:

Total Volume = 2,000 L → Retained = 1,300 L, Runoff = 700 L

Extensive green roofs (shallow soil depth, typically 2-6 inches) commonly cite retention rates in the roughly 50-80% range, depending on soil depth, plant species, and storm intensity - intensive green roofs with deeper soil profiles and larger plants can retain even more, though at significantly greater structural weight and cost.
