Ignition Energy Calculator: Minimum Energy Needed to Ignite a Mixture

Minimum ignition energy (MIE) is the smallest amount of energy, typically from a spark, needed to ignite a fuel-air mixture. MIE is strongly pressure-dependent: higher pressure mixtures are denser and easier to ignite, so MIE drops sharply as pressure rises. This calculator scales a known reference MIE to a different operating pressure.

The Formula

MIE = MIEref / (P)n

Worked Example

A fuel-air mixture has a reference MIE of 0.28 mJ at 1 atm, and the system operates at 2 atm with a pressure exponent of 1.75.

MIE = 0.28 / 21.75 = 0.0832 mJ
