Laminar Burning Velocity Calculator: Temperature-Corrected Flame Speed
Laminar burning velocity is not a fixed property of a fuel - it rises noticeably as the unburned gas gets hotter, which matters for preheated combustion systems and recuperative burners. This calculator applies a power-law temperature correction to a known reference velocity.
The Formula
SL = SL,ref × (Tu / 298)2
Where SL,ref is the laminar burning velocity measured at a 298K reference temperature, and Tu is the actual unburned gas temperature.
Worked Example
Methane-air at stoichiometric conditions has a reference laminar burning velocity of about 0.40 m/s at 298K. Preheating the unburned mixture to 500K:
SL = 0.40 × (500 / 298)2 = 1.13 m/s
