On a Dry Basis: Why Measurements Need a Standard

A flue gas analyzer reports the exhaust's composition — but almost always “on a dry basis,” as if the water vapor were not there. This convention seems odd until you understand the practical problem it solves, and the deeper lesson it teaches about why any measurement needs a clearly defined reference to mean anything at all.

The Water Vapor Problem

Real flue gas is wet — full of water vapor produced by combustion. But water vapor is troublesome to measure: it condenses unpredictably in cool sampling lines, changing the gas before the instrument sees it. Rather than fight this, analyzers simply remove the water and report the composition of the remaining dry gas, sidestepping the moisture that would otherwise confuse the reading.

The Dry Basis

Reporting “on a dry basis” means expressing each component as a fraction of the gas with the water removed. This gives a consistent, repeatable measurement regardless of how much moisture the sample happened to carry or lose. Two analysts measuring the same exhaust will agree, because both reference the same well-defined dry condition rather than the slippery, variable wet one.

Why Standards Matter

The dry basis is one example of a broader principle: a measurement is meaningful only against a defined reference.
