The Triumph of the Joule
Science eventually settled on one coherent unit: the joule, the SI unit of energy, named for James Prescott Joule, who proved heat and work are the same currency. The joule ties energy to the fundamental units of mass, length, and time, giving a single, universal measure. In principle it could replace them all — but the legacy units are too entrenched in commerce and habit to disappear.
Why Conversion Endures
Because a utility bill quotes therms or kilowatt-hours while an engineering spec lists megajoules and an appliance nameplate shows BTUs, conversion between units is unavoidable. Every conversion routes through a common reference — often the joule or the megajoule — expressing the source unit in it and then re-expressing it as the target. The math is simple; the reason it is needed is centuries of measuring energy in whatever unit suited the moment.
