Energy Conversion Calculator

Converting Between the Energy Units Combustion Engineering Actually Uses

Combustion and heating calculations mix units depending on region and industry — kWh, megajoules, BTU, kilocalories, and therms all show up on different equipment nameplates and utility bills. This calculator converts cleanly between all five.

The Formula

Value in MJ = Value × MJ-per-unit; Result = Value in MJ / MJ-per-target-unit

Reference factors: 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ, 1 BTU = 0.00105506 MJ, 1 kcal = 0.0041868 MJ, 1 therm = 105.506 MJ.

Worked Example

Converting 500 kWh to BTU:

500 × 3.6 = 1,800 MJ; 1,800 / 0.00105506 = 1,705,725 BTU

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Value to convert.
  2. Select the source unit (From) and target unit (To).
  3. Select Calculate to get the converted value.
