The fundamental heating and cooling equation
Every substance has a characteristic specific heat capacity, the energy needed to raise one kilogram of it by one degree - this single equation underlies nearly every calculation involving heating or cooling a known mass of material.
Worked example
For 2kg of water heated by 20K (specific heat 4186 J/kg.K):
Q = 2 x 4186 x 20 = 167.44 kJ

Water's unusually high specific heat compared to metals and air is exactly why it is so effective as a coolant, heating medium, and thermal buffer - it absorbs far more energy per degree of temperature rise than most other common materials.
