How Much Furnace Heat Actually Does Useful Work

Industrial furnaces lose heat to open doors, walls, and exhaust gas in addition to whatever fuel input doesn't reach the material being processed. Furnace efficiency isolates how much of the total heat supplied is genuinely utilized.

The Formula

Furnace Efficiency % = (Heat Utilized / Heat Supplied) × 100

Worked Example

A furnace utilizing 180 kW of a 400 kW total heat supply:

Efficiency = (180 / 400) × 100 = 45%
