Dots, Not Tones: How Ink Really Sits on the Page

The ink coverage calculator ties cost to the percentage of a page covered in ink, sensible and true. But "coverage" hides a beautiful trick that underlies almost all printing: a press cannot actually lay down a continuous, variable shade of ink. It can only put ink somewhere or leave it bare. Every soft photograph, every smooth gradient, is an illusion built from tiny dots, and the way those dots behave is what really determines coverage and cost.

The Illusion of Continuous Tone

Look closely at a printed photo and you will find it is made of a grid of small dots, a halftone. Where a mid-gray is wanted, the press prints small dots with white paper showing between them; for a darker tone, the dots grow until they nearly touch; for near-black, they merge. From normal viewing distance your eye blends dot and gap into a smooth shade. The press only ever prints solid ink; the appearance of a continuous tone is manufactured by varying the size of dots you are not meant to see individually.

Coverage Is Really Dot Area

This reframes what "ink coverage" means. A page that looks like a light gray is not lightly inking every point, it is fully inking a small fraction of points and leaving the rest blank. Coverage percentage is, in effect, the proportion of the page area actually occupied by halftone dots. Dot Gain: The Spreading Ink

Ink is a liquid pressed onto absorbent paper, and it spreads. A dot printed at a given size ends up slightly larger on the page as the ink soaks and squashes outward, a phenomenon called dot gain. The practical effect is that printed images come out darker than the file specifies, because every dot has quietly grown, increasing the real inked area. Uncoated, absorbent stocks show more dot gain than smooth coated ones, which is why the same file can look heavier on cheap paper.

Why This Matters for Cost and Quality

Dot gain means the actual ink coverage, and thus cost, can run a touch above what the design nominally calls for, especially on absorbent papers where dots swell most. It also means coverage and paper choice are linked: a stock that drinks ink both raises effective coverage and softens the image.
