Ink Coverage Calculator

Ink Cost Scales with What's Actually on the Page

A page with a full-bleed photo and one with a few lines of text cost dramatically different amounts to print, even though they're both "one page" — the difference is ink coverage. This calculator ties ink cost directly to coverage percentage rather than treating every page as identical, which is the more accurate way to estimate cost for jobs with mixed content like brochures, reports with charts, or photo-heavy layouts.

The Formula

Ink Cost per Page = Cost at 100% Coverage × (Coverage % / 100)
Total Ink Cost = Ink Cost per Page × Number of Pages

"Cost at 100% coverage" is the ink cost if a page were completely saturated — a figure typically available from a printer manufacturer's cost-per-page rating or measured directly from a full-coverage test print.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Mixed-content jobs — estimating ink cost separately for text-heavy pages versus image-heavy pages in the same document.
  • Marketing collateral — photo-heavy brochures and flyers can have ink costs several times higher than a typical text page, which this calculation makes explicit.
  • Printer and toner comparisons — comparing true cost-per-page between devices at a realistic coverage level rather than a manufacturer's best-case rating.
  • Design cost tradeoffs — quantifying how much a large background color or full-page image adds to print cost versus a lighter-coverage layout.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the estimated ink coverage as a percentage (0–100).
  2. Enter the ink cost at 100% coverage, in dollars per page.
  3. Enter the number of pages.
  4. Select Calculate to get the total ink cost and the cost per page.
Note: Standard text pages typically run 5–15% ink coverage, while a full-bleed photo page can approach 100% — estimate coverage by eye or from your design software's ink preview before entering it here.
