The Limiting Dimension Decides Your Real Resolution
When an image's pixel dimensions don't perfectly match a print's aspect ratio, width and height produce two different DPI figures — and the lower of the two is what actually determines print quality, because it's the bottleneck. This calculator reports that effective, limiting DPI directly instead of leaving you to compare two numbers yourself, and can also work in reverse to tell you the pixel resolution a target print size and DPI require.
The Formula
Effective DPI = min(Width DPI, Height DPI)
Find Required Pixels: Pixels = Print Dimension (in) × Target DPI
Where This Calculation Matters
- Pre-press quality checks — catching a resolution shortfall before a job goes to print rather than after proofs come back soft.
- Client file review — print shops routinely reject or flag files below a minimum effective DPI; this calculation replicates that check.
- Cropped or repositioned images — when an image doesn't exactly match a layout's aspect ratio, the effective DPI accounts for whichever dimension is more constrained.
- Scanning and capture planning — working out the pixel resolution needed to hit a target DPI before scanning or photographing source material.

Higher viewing distance allows lower DPI without a visible quality loss — a banner viewed from across a room can look sharp at a DPI that would look soft on a business card held inches from the eye.
