A Statistic About Variation
Heritability measures how much of the variation in a trait across a population is due to genetic differences between individuals, versus environmental differences. It is a property of a population under particular conditions, not of an individual. It answers “why do people differ?” — not “how much of one person's trait comes from their genes?”
The Great Misreading
The near-universal error is to treat heritability as the genetic fraction of a trait within a person. A heritability of 0.7 does not mean 70 percent of anyone's height or intelligence is caused by their genes and 30 percent by their environment. It means that 70 percent of the differences among people in the studied population traced to genetic differences. The two statements are not the same.

It Changes With Circumstances
Because heritability compares genetic variation to environmental variation, it shifts with circumstances. If everyone shared identical environments, all remaining differences would be genetic and heritability would rise — without any change in the genes. If environments grew more varied, heritability could fall. A heritability figure is a snapshot of one population in one setting, not a permanent truth about a trait.
Why the Distinction Matters
Misreading heritability has fueled real harm, lending false authority to claims that traits are fixed or that group differences are genetic. A high heritability does not mean a trait cannot be changed by environment, nor that differences between groups are genetic at all. Handling this number with care is not pedantry — it guards against genuine misuse of genetics.
