Twin studies are a foundational research method in behavioral genetics, comparing how often both twins in a pair share a trait (concordance) between identical and fraternal twins to estimate a genetic contribution.

Why Compare Identical vs. Fraternal Twins
Identical (monozygotic) twins share essentially 100% of their genes, while fraternal (dizygotic) twins share on average 50% - the same as typical siblings. A meaningfully higher concordance rate in identical twins compared to fraternal twins for the same trait suggests that trait has a genetic component, since the only systematic difference between the two twin types is their degree of genetic similarity.
A Known Limitation
Twin studies carry a well-documented limitation: identical twins may also experience more similar environments than fraternal twins do (sometimes called the "equal environments assumption" problem) - this can partially confound purely genetic interpretations of any concordance gap observed between the two twin types, which is why modern behavioral genetics research increasingly combines twin studies with other methods like adoption studies and molecular genetic analysis.
