The C-value (haploid genome DNA content, measured in picograms) is a fixed property of a species' genome - but total DNA content per cell scales directly with ploidy level, which varies both between and sometimes within species.

Total DNA Content = Haploid DNA Content (C-value) x Ploidy Level

Example

A haploid DNA content of 3.5 pg at diploid (2n) ploidy:

Total DNA Content = 3.5 x 2 = 7.0 pg

Polyploidy Is Common in Plants

Many plant species naturally exist at multiple ploidy levels - common bread wheat, for example, is hexaploid (6n), the result of ancient hybridization events between related wild grass species. Polyploidy is a well-documented and important driver of plant speciation and modern crop breeding, since increased ploidy often produces larger cells, fruits, or flowers as a direct consequence of the additional DNA and cellular content involved.

Practical Relevance

Knowing total DNA content per cell matters for flow cytometry analysis, genome sequencing project planning (larger polyploid genomes require proportionally more sequencing data to achieve the same coverage depth), and understanding basic cell biology differences between related species or varieties at different ploidy levels.
