The fare calculator builds a price from a base charge, a per-kilometre rate, and a discount. That tidy structure is the residue of nearly two centuries of argument about what a train ticket should cost and who decides. Rail fares have swung between rigid legal formulas and free commercial pricing, and the components you enter each carry a piece of that history.

The Distance-Based Tariff

The earliest fare systems were almost purely distance-based, a rate per mile, because it felt objectively fair and was simple to publish and audit. The per-kilometre rate in the calculator is the direct descendant of that principle: the further you travel, the more you pay, in proportion. For a monopoly infrastructure that the public and government watched closely, a transparent per-distance charge was as much a political necessity as a commercial choice.

The Parliamentary Train

Distance pricing alone excluded the poor, so in some countries the state intervened directly. Legislation compelled railways to run at least one cheap service a day, stopping everywhere, at a capped low fare per mile, so that ordinary people could afford to travel at all. This "Parliamentary" service is the ancestor of the regulated base fare and the mandated concession: proof that a rail fare was never purely a market price, but partly a social contract.

The Rise of the Discount

The discount field encodes the modern era. Once railways were free to price commercially, the flat distance rate fractured into a web of conditional prices: railcards, off-peak reductions, group and advance-purchase deals. Each is a discount applied to a notional full fare, exactly the structure the calculator models, subtotal first, then a percentage off. The "full fare" became a reference point that most passengers never actually pay, a ceiling from which discounts are subtracted.

Yield Management: Pricing the Seat, Not the Distance

The newest layer abandons distance almost entirely. Borrowing from airlines, operators price the individual seat by demand: the same journey costs different amounts depending on how full the train is and how far ahead you book. Here the per-kilometre logic dissolves into a base fare heavily modulated by discounts and surcharges, which is why the calculator's flexible base-plus-discount structure can still approximate a modern fare even though the underlying philosophy, charge what the seat is worth, is the opposite of charging by the mile.
