Fuel Burn Scales With Distance, Not Time

Diesel-hauled rail services report fuel efficiency the same way road vehicles do — consumption per 100 km travelled — because it's distance, not duration, that determines how much fuel a locomotive burns. This calculator converts a consumption rate and trip distance into total fuel required, and optionally into a total fuel cost.

The Formula

Total Fuel = (Distance × Consumption Rate per 100 km) / 100

When a fuel price is supplied, total cost is simply total fuel multiplied by the price per liter.

Where This Is Useful

  • Route cost estimation — project the fuel cost of a diesel-hauled service across a given route before committing to a schedule.
  • Comparing consist configurations — test how consumption changes with different locomotive types or train lengths by varying the consumption rate input.
  • Budgeting against fuel price volatility — re-run the same distance and consumption figures against different fuel prices to see the budget impact of a price change.

Worked Example

A 300 km run at a consumption rate of 4.5 liters per 100 km, with fuel priced at $1.50 per liter:

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Distance to be travelled, in kilometers.
  2. Enter the Fuel Consumption Rate in liters per 100 km.
  3. Optionally enter a Fuel Price per Liter to also get a total cost.
  4. Select Calculate to see total fuel required and, if a price was given, total fuel cost.
