Platform Length Calculator

Platform Length Calculator

Designing or evaluating a station platform? This calculator recommends a length based on the full train it needs to serve.

Recommended Platform Length = (Number of Cars x Car Length) + Buffer

Example

An 8-car train, 25m cars, 5m buffer:

Train Length = 200m → Recommended platform length: 205 m

What Happens When Platforms Are Too Short

Platforms shorter than the full train length force operators to either use "selective door opening" (only cars adjacent to the platform open their doors) or require passengers to walk through the train to reach a platform-accessible car - both add complexity and can create safety or accessibility concerns.

Why a Buffer Is Included

A small buffer beyond the exact calculated train length accommodates normal stopping-position variance - trains rarely stop at the mathematically perfect position every single time, so a modest margin avoids doors landing just short of the platform edge.
