Average Speed Is the Number Behind Every Timetable
The scheduled speed printed on a timetable is rarely the top speed a train ever reaches — it's an average across the whole run, including acceleration out of stations and deceleration into them. Dividing distance covered by time taken strips out all of that detail and gives the one number that actually determines whether a service arrives on time.
The Formula
Speed = Distance / Time
The result is given in km/h, with the equivalent in meters per second alongside it, since m/s is the unit used in most physics-based calculations like braking distance.
Where This Is Useful
- Benchmarking service performance — compare the average speed a service actually achieves against the speed the timetable assumes.
- Comparing routes or modes — a straightforward apples-to-apples figure for comparing a rail route against a road or air alternative.
