Example

A 4,400 HP locomotive pulling a 2,000-ton train:

HP/Ton = 4,400 / 2,000 = 2.20 (Intermodal/manifest freight range)

Why This Ratio Matters More Than Raw Horsepower Alone

Comparing raw locomotive horsepower without accounting for total train weight is misleading - a powerful locomotive pulling an unusually heavy train can have a lower effective HP/ton than a smaller locomotive pulling a light train, which is why this normalized ratio is the standard comparison metric.

Different Service Types Target Different Ratios

Passenger and high-speed rail service is commonly designed with a much higher HP/ton ratio, prioritizing rapid acceleration and high top speed, while heavy bulk freight (like unit coal or grain trains) targets a much lower ratio, prioritizing tractive effort and fuel efficiency over speed.
