A train approaching at 100 km/h, detected 600m from the crossing, 20-second required minimum:

Actual Warning Time = 21.6 seconds → Sufficient

Why the Required Minimum Matters

Level crossing warning systems must detect an approaching train far enough in advance to provide at least the minimum required warning time - commonly around 20 seconds - giving vehicles and pedestrians enough time to safely clear the crossing before the train arrives.

Why Higher Speed Lines Need Longer Detection Distances

Since warning time is inversely related to train speed at a fixed detection distance, higher-speed rail lines require proportionally longer detection distances (or faster-acting warning equipment) to maintain the same safety margin as a slower conventional line using the same detection distance.
