Track Doesn't Care About Total Weight — It Cares About Weight Per Axle

A wagon's total weight determines how much load it carries, but it's the weight pressing down through each individual axle that determines whether the track structure underneath can take it. Spread the same tonnage over more axles and the load per axle drops; concentrate it on fewer axles and the load per axle rises, potentially past what the rail, sleepers, and bridges beneath were designed for.

The Formula

Axle Load = Total Gross Weight / Number of Axles

Where This Is Useful

  • Wagon and locomotive design — adding axles to a heavy vehicle is a standard way to bring axle load down to an acceptable figure without reducing total payload.
  • Route clearance — different lines and bridges are rated for different maximum axle loads; a wagon has to be checked against the lowest limit anywhere on its route.
  • Loading freight wagons — uneven loading can push individual axles over their limit even when the total wagon weight is within bounds.

Worked Example

An 80-tonne wagon on 4 axles, checked against a commonly cited 22.5-tonne maximum axle load used on many heavy-haul freight lines:

Maximum permissible axle load varies significantly by railway, track class, and country — always check the actual limit published for the specific route rather than relying on a generic figure.
