A working railway timetable rests entirely on one relationship: given any two of distance, speed, and time, the third is fixed. Timetable planners use it constantly — to check whether a scheduled run time is physically achievable, to see what average speed a given slot requires, or to work out how far a train travels in a fixed window. This calculator solves for whichever of the three you need.
The Formula
Time = Distance / Speed
Speed = Distance / Time
Distance = Speed × Time
Speed = Distance / Time
Distance = Speed × Time
Where This Is Useful
- Timetable feasibility — check whether a proposed schedule between two stations is achievable at a realistic average speed, including stops.
- Setting running times — work backward from a target average speed to the running time a new timetable slot should allow.
- Comparing services — an express and a local service covering the same route can be compared directly on average speed once distance and time are known.
