British companies adopted a uniform "railway time" synchronized to one observatory, distributing the signal down the telegraph wires that ran beside the tracks. Town clocks that disagreed with the station clock were gradually shamed into conformity. For a period, some public clocks famously carried two minute hands, one for local time and one for railway time, a visible record of an old world giving way.

From Railway Time to Time Zones

As networks spanned continents, a single national clock stretched too far, so the railways carved the map into bands, each an hour apart, keyed to a global reference meridian.
