Two philosophies emerged. The storage heater keeps a tank of water hot and ready, trading standby heat loss for instant availability. The tankless, or on-demand, heater warms water only as it flows, avoiding standby loss but demanding a large burst of heating power exactly when the tap opens. The choice trades continuous small losses against a high peak load.
