The World Grades Differently

Different countries and even different institutions use fundamentally different grading systems, and they are not merely rescaled versions of one another. Some use a grade-point average on a 10-point scale, others on a 4-point scale; some report percentages; some use letter grades; and some use classifications like a "First Class" or "distinction" honors system. Where a country grades degrees into named classes rather than a continuous number, converting that classification to a GPA or percentage requires judgment, not arithmetic, because a class band covers a range and its boundaries reflect that system's particular standards. Deciding what a given class "equals" on a GPA scale is inherently approximate, and different evaluators may reach different conclusions. This is why records from classification-based systems are especially hard to translate into point-based ones, there is genuine ambiguity in the mapping.

How Conversion Is Done Properly

Because clean formulas do not exist, serious grade conversion is done by credential evaluation, a professional assessment that considers the specific institution, the country's grading norms, and the context of the marks, rather than applying a single rule. Universities and employers that must compare international records rely on such evaluations, or on their own carefully developed conversion guidelines, precisely because a naive formula would misjudge applicants. The evaluation asks not "what number does this scale to?" but "what level of achievement does this represent in its own system, and what is the equivalent here?", a question of interpretation informed by knowledge of both systems. This is why an official conversion can differ from what a simple online converter suggests.
