CGPA Calculator
Rolling Multiple Semesters Into One Cumulative Figure
A cumulative grade point average, or CGPA, tracks academic performance across an entire program rather than a single term. It's the figure used on transcripts in many international university systems that grade on a 10-point scale — common across India and several other countries — and it behaves exactly like a GPA calculation, just applied across semesters instead of individual courses.
The Formula
Each semester's GPA is weighted by that semester's total credit hours, so a heavier course load in one term counts proportionally more toward the cumulative figure than a lighter one.
Worked Example
A student completes three semesters on a 10-point scale: 8.2 GPA across 18 credits, 8.6 GPA across 20 credits, and 7.9 GPA across 19 credits.
Total credits = 18 + 20 + 19 = 57
CGPA = 469.7 / 57 = 8.24
Where This Matters
- Placement and job eligibility — many campus recruiters and postgraduate programs set a minimum CGPA cutoff, often converted to an equivalent percentage for comparison across institutions.
- Tracking trend across semesters — because each semester enters the formula individually, it's straightforward to see whether performance is improving or declining term over term.
- Scholarship and fellowship renewal — cumulative rather than single-term performance is usually what's checked when funding is renewed each year.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the GPA earned in a semester (0–10 scale).
- Enter the total credit hours attempted that semester.
- Repeat for each additional semester — up to four semester/credit pairs are supported, with the last two optional.
- Select Calculate to get the credit-weighted cumulative GPA.
