The Unweighted Baseline Colleges Recalculate Anyway

Many college admissions offices strip out a high school's own weighting system and recompute GPA on a flat, unweighted 4.0 scale so every applicant is compared on equal footing, regardless of how generous or strict their home school's honors bonuses happen to be. Knowing this unweighted number ahead of time — separate from whatever weighted figure appears on a transcript — gives a more accurate read on how an application will actually be evaluated.

The Formula

High School GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours)

Worked Example

Freshman-to-senior transcript with a B+ (3 credits), an A- (4 credits), and a B (3 credits) in three representative courses.

Points = (3.3×3) + (3.7×4) + (3.0×3) = 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 33.7
Credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
GPA = 33.7 / 10 = 3.37

Where This Matters

Comparing across high schools — the unweighted scale is the common denominator between a school that inflates weighted GPAs and one that doesn't offer weighting at all.
NCAA eligibility calculations — the NCAA Eligibility Center uses its own core-course GPA methodology on the unweighted scale, separate from whatever a high school transcript reports.
Setting a baseline before senior year — knowing the unweighted GPA through junior year helps estimate what's achievable by graduation with a defined number of credits left.
