Target Average Score Calculator
Planning backward from a target grade
Rather than wondering test by test whether you're on track, this calculator works backward from a target overall average to show exactly what average you need across all remaining tests combined - useful for realistic planning heading into a final stretch of exams.
Worked example
For a student with 3 existing tests totaling 255 points (85 average), targeting a 90 overall average across 5 total tests:
Needed Total = 90 x 5 = 450
Needed Average on Remaining 2 Tests = (450 - 255) / 2 = 97.5 average needed (Achievable)
If the calculated needed average comes back above 100 on a standard scale, the target is not mathematically achievable given the existing scores - that's useful information on its own, signaling it may be time to adjust the target or focus on extra credit and other grade components instead.
