A raw test score alone doesn't reveal much without context - percentile rank shows exactly what proportion of test takers you outperformed, which accounts for how difficult or easy that specific test administration turned out to be for everyone who took it.
Worked example
For a test where 750 out of 1,000 total test takers scored below you:
Percentile = 750 / 1000 x 100 = 75.0th percentile
Frequently asked questions
Does a 75th percentile mean I got 75% of questions right? No - percentile and raw percentage score are entirely different measurements. A 75th percentile means you scored better than 75% of test takers, regardless of what raw percentage of questions you actually answered correctly.
Why do standardized tests report percentiles? Percentile rank lets colleges, employers, and testing organizations compare scores meaningfully across different test administrations and years, even when the specific test questions and difficulty vary between sittings.
