Final Grade Calculator
Working Backward From a Target Grade
Rather than projecting a final grade forward from scores already earned, this calculator runs the arithmetic in reverse: given a current grade, the final exam's weight, and a desired overall grade, it solves for the exact score needed on the final to get there. That's often the more useful question in the last week of a term, when the only variable still in a student's control is the final exam itself.
The Formula
This is the algebraic rearrangement of the standard weighted-average formula, solved for the one unknown component.
Worked Example
A student currently has an 88% overall grade, the final exam counts for 20% of the course grade, and the target overall grade is 90%.
= (90 − 88 × 0.80) / 0.20 = (90 − 70.4) / 0.20 = 19.6 / 0.20 = 98.00%
That student needs a 98% on the final to reach a 90% overall — useful information for deciding how much extra prep time the exam deserves.
Where This Matters
- Deciding whether a target is realistic — when the required score comes back above 100%, reaching that overall grade isn't mathematically possible on the final alone, which is worth knowing before losing sleep over it.
- Confirming a grade is already locked in — when the required score comes back at or below 0%, the target grade is already secured regardless of final exam performance.
- Setting a realistic study target — a required score in the comfortable range (say, matching or slightly above a student's typical performance) confirms the current study plan is on track.
