Semester GPA Calculator
Isolating One Term's Performance
A cumulative GPA can hide what's actually happening in the current term — a strong overall average built up over several semesters can mask a rough one right now, and a weak overall average can obscure real improvement. Calculating the current semester on its own, separate from everything that came before it, is what shows the actual trend and what's realistically achievable before finals.
The Formula
Semester GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours)
Only courses taken in the current semester feed into this calculation, using the standard 4.0 grade-point scale.
Worked Example
This semester: an A- (3 credits), a B (4 credits), and a B+ (3 credits).
Quality points = (3.7×3) + (3.0×4) + (3.3×3) = 11.1 + 12.0 + 9.9 = 33.0
Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Semester GPA = 33.0 / 10 = 3.30
Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Semester GPA = 33.0 / 10 = 3.30
Where This Matters
- Mid-semester projections — entering current grades as they stand (even before finals) gives an early read on where the term is heading, in time to adjust study effort.
- Isolating a recovery term — after a difficult semester, some scholarship or probation reviews specifically look at whether the most recent term shows improvement, which requires the semester figure on its own, not blended with history.
- Course-load experiments — comparing this term's GPA against a term with a different credit load or course mix shows how workload correlates with performance for a given student.
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the letter grade earned in each course taken this semester.
- Enter the credit hours for that course.
- Repeat for each course — up to six course/credit pairs are supported, with the last four optional.
- Select Calculate to get this semester's credit-weighted GPA.
