SAT Score Calculator
From Raw Answers to a 1600-Point Scale
The SAT doesn't report the number of questions answered correctly — it reports a scaled score between 200 and 800 for each section, based on the difficulty of the specific test form. The exact conversion table (called equating) is unpublished and shifts slightly between test dates, but the College Board has confirmed the relationship is close to linear across the raw-score range, which makes it possible to estimate a scaled score closely enough for practice-test planning.
The Formula
This linear approximation is applied separately to the Reading & Writing section and the Math section, and the two scaled scores are added for the 400–1600 composite.
Worked Example
48 correct out of 54 Reading & Writing questions, and 38 correct out of 44 Math questions.
Math: 200 + (38/44) × 600 = 718 → rounded to 720
Total = 730 + 720 = 1450
Where This Matters
- Practice test tracking — converting raw practice-test results to an estimated scaled score makes progress across several practice tests comparable.
- Superscore planning — many colleges combine a student's best section scores across multiple sittings; estimating each section separately helps decide whether a retake is worth scheduling.
- Target-score benchmarking — comparing an estimated score against a target school's middle 50% range shows how many more raw questions need to go from wrong to right.
