Spacing plants is not just an aesthetic decision about how a bed will look filled in. It is a wager about competition — because plants set too close will spend their lives fighting one another for light, water, and root room, and the loser is usually every plant in the row. The ecology of that struggle is the real reason spacing tables exist.

Neighbors Are Rivals

A plant cannot move to a better spot, so where it is placed decides who it competes with for the rest of its life. Above ground, the contest is for light: a faster-growing neighbor shades a slower one, and the shaded plant thins, leans, and weakens. Below ground, roots compete for water and nutrients in overlapping zones. Crowd plants together and every individual gets a smaller share of a fixed pie.

The Mature-Size Rule

The single most common spacing mistake is planting for today rather than for maturity. A row of young shrubs eighteen inches apart looks sparse and tempts tighter spacing, but each may spread to several feet across at maturity. Space by the mature spread and the young planting looks thin for a season or two; space by the young size and the mature planting becomes a crowded, disease-prone tangle that must be thinned or removed.

Airflow and Disease

Competition is not the only cost of crowding. Plants packed together trap humid, still air among their leaves — ideal conditions for fungal disease to spread from plant to plant. Adequate spacing lets air move through the planting, drying foliage and slowing the leaf-to-leaf jump of pathogens. Much of the advice to give plants room is really disease prevention in disguise.

Row Versus Grid

The geometry of a planting shapes the competition. A single row — a hedge or windbreak — has each plant competing mainly with two neighbors, so it can often run tighter for a continuous screen. A grid or mass planting has each plant surrounded on all sides, so spacing must account for competition in every direction. The two layouts are genuinely different problems, which is why they use different arithmetic.
