Sprinkler Heads Don't Cover Full Circles in Practice

A single sprinkler head's spray pattern looks like a full circle on the box, but no irrigation designer plans coverage that way. Two heads spaced a full diameter apart leave dry crescents in the corners between them; the standard fix is to space heads so their spray patterns overlap, matched head-to-head, which trades some redundancy for even coverage. That means the number of heads a lawn needs is driven by the square of the throw radius in a grid layout, not the full circle area of a single head.

The Formula

Full Circle Coverage = π × Radius²
Effective Head-to-Head Coverage (square spacing) = Radius²
Heads Needed = ceiling(Total Area ÷ Effective Coverage)

The effective coverage per head in a square grid layout is simply the radius squared — noticeably less than the full-circle area of πr² — because standard practice spaces heads roughly one radius apart so adjacent spray patterns overlap and eliminate dry spots.

Where This Matters

  • New irrigation system design — before laying out zones and running pipe, knowing the head count for a given area and nozzle radius sets the budget and material list.
  • Comparing nozzle types — a higher-radius rotor nozzle needs far fewer heads than a short-throw spray nozzle to cover the same lawn, which this calculator makes directly comparable.
  • Zone planning — running separate sections of a yard (front lawn, back lawn, planting beds) through the calculator individually helps size each irrigation zone before it's wired to a controller.

These figures assume uniform, obstruction-free square-grid spacing; actual head counts on real lawns are usually higher once beds, walkways, and irregular shapes are accounted for.
