Ordering Sod by the Pallet, Not the Guess
Sod is perishable — a pallet left rolled up in the sun for more than a day or two starts to yellow and die before it ever touches soil. That makes accurate ordering more than a budgeting exercise: order short and you're waiting days for a second delivery while the first pallet degrades; order long and you're paying for grass that never gets installed. This calculator turns a yard's dimensions into an exact square footage, then converts that into sod pieces and pallets so the order matches the job.
The Formula
Sod Needed = Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Pieces Needed = ceiling(Sod Needed ÷ Piece Size)
Pallets Needed = ceiling(Sod Needed ÷ Pallet Coverage)
The waste allowance accounts for irregular bed edges, curves around trees or walkways, and the small overlap needed between slabs — a straightforward rectangular lawn can often get away with 5%, while a yard full of curved beds and obstacles warrants 10–15%.
Where This Matters
- New lawn installs — sod suppliers sell by the pallet, and most won't split a pallet for a small overage, so knowing the pallet count up front avoids either a wasted trip or a short delivery.
- Patch repairs — for smaller repair jobs, the piece count matters more than the pallet count, since individual slabs are often sold or cut separately.
- Irregular lots — corner lots, lawns with island beds, or yards split by a driveway benefit from a higher waste percentage since more slabs need to be cut to fit.

- Enter the sod piece size in square feet if it differs from the standard 10 sq ft slab.
