Sprinkler Head Count Calculator

Proper sprinkler system design requires head-to-head coverage overlap, not just enough heads to theoretically "cover" an area - this calculator accounts for that overlap requirement.

Formula

Raw Coverage Per Head = π × Radius²
Effective Coverage (with overlap) = Raw Coverage / 1.3
Heads Needed = ceil(Area / Effective Coverage Per Head)

Example

1,000 sq ft area, sprinkler heads with a 15 ft coverage radius:

Raw Coverage = 706.9 sq ft → Effective Coverage (with overlap) = 543.7 sq ft → 2 heads needed

Why Overlap Matters

Each area of lawn should ideally be reached by at least two sprinkler heads, not just one - a single sprinkler's spray pattern is typically weaker toward its outer edge than close to the head itself, and wind can distort coverage further, leaving dry patches at the theoretical edge of a single head's "coverage circle" if heads are spaced at their maximum radius apart with no overlap.

Real Design Considerations

This simplified calculation assumes a circular coverage pattern - real sprinkler design also accounts for irregular lot shapes, matched precipitation rates between different head types on the same zone, and wind exposure, all of which a professional irrigation designer would factor into a final system layout.
