Formula
Cross-Section Area = 0.5 x Base Width x Height
Volume (cu ft) = Cross-Section Area x Length
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27
Example
A 30 ft long berm with a 6 ft base width and 2 ft height:
Cross-Section = 6.0 sq ft → Volume = 180 cu ft → 6.67 cubic yards
Why Triangular Cross-Section?
Real berms typically have gently rounded profiles rather than sharp triangular edges, but the triangular approximation gives a reasonably close, slightly conservative material estimate for ordering fill soil - rounded profiles have marginally less volume than the equivalent triangular shape, so this method tends to slightly overestimate rather than underestimate, which is the safer direction to err when ordering bulk fill material.
Practical Considerations
Fill soil for berms should be compacted in layers as it's placed to avoid significant settling over time - a berm built from loose, uncompacted fill can settle to noticeably less than its original height within the first year, so factor this into your final design height if a specific finished height is important to the overall landscape design.
