The Bag's Percentage, Not the Bag's Weight, Is What Matters

Fertilizer bags are labeled with three numbers — the N-P-K ratio — and the first number is the percentage of nitrogen by weight. A 40-pound bag of 10-10-10 and a 40-pound bag of 29-0-4 deliver very different amounts of actual nitrogen to the lawn, even though both bags weigh the same. Lawn care guidance is almost always expressed as pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, so converting from a bag's percentage to an application weight is the step most homeowners skip and most over- or under-apply because of.

The Formula

Nitrogen Needed (lbs) = Target Rate (lbs N per 1,000 sq ft) × (Area ÷ 1000)
Fertilizer Needed (lbs) = Nitrogen Needed ÷ (Nitrogen % ÷ 100)

The target rate is the amount of actual nitrogen recommended per 1,000 square feet — commonly around 1 lb per application for cool-season lawns. Dividing that nitrogen requirement by the bag's nitrogen percentage back-calculates the total product weight needed to deliver it.

Where This Matters

  • Avoiding fertilizer burn — applying too much nitrogen at once can scorch grass, especially with high-nitrogen quick-release products; calculating the exact product weight for a target rate prevents overshooting.
  • Comparing products at the store — a higher-nitrogen bag covers more lawn per pound of product, which changes the cost-per-application math between two differently labeled fertilizers.
  • Multi-application programs — seasonal lawn care programs specify a target rate per application; running each application's area and target rate through the calculator keeps a multi-step program consistent.

A target rate of roughly 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application is a widely used general guideline; specific turf types and regional extension recommendations may differ.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the lawn area in square feet.
  2. Enter the fertilizer nitrogen percentage — the first of the three numbers on the bag (e.g. 20 for a 20-5-10 blend).
  3. Enter the target rate in lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft (defaults to 1 lb).
