Liebig's Law of the Minimum
In the nineteenth century the chemist Justus von Liebig framed a principle that still governs fertilizing: growth is limited not by the total resources available but by the single scarcest essential nutrient. A lawn with abundant everything except nitrogen grows only as much as its nitrogen allows — the “limiting nutrient.” Adding more of what is already plentiful does nothing; adding the missing element unlocks growth. This is why matching a fertilizer to what the soil lacks matters more than simply applying more.
Why Nitrogen Rules the Lawn
Grass is grown for its leaves, and leaves are built with nitrogen — a core component of chlorophyll and of the proteins that drive photosynthesis. That is why lawn fertilizers lead with nitrogen (the first of the three N-P-K numbers) and why nitrogen produces the fast green flush homeowners associate with feeding a lawn. It is also the most easily lost, washing out of soil or escaping as gas, so it must be replenished regularly in a way phosphorus and potassium need not be.

The Percentage, Not the Weight
Liebig's insight has a practical corollary: what feeds the lawn is the amount of actual element delivered, not the weight of the bag. Two equally heavy bags with different nitrogen percentages deliver very different amounts of nitrogen, which is why sound fertilizing works backward from a target rate of actual nutrient per unit area to the product weight needed — the calculation most homeowners skip.
The Danger of Too Much
More is not better. Excess nitrogen can scorch grass outright — fertilizer burn — as concentrated salts pull moisture from roots, and the surplus that grass cannot use washes into waterways, feeding algae blooms far downstream. Liebig's law cuts both ways: past the limiting point, extra nitrogen stops helping the lawn and starts causing harm.
