Why Paver Count Depends on More Than Square Footage
Two patios of identical size can require very different paver counts depending on the unit size chosen — a 24-by-24-inch paver covers four times the area of a 12-by-12-inch paver, so the piece count for the same patio swings by a factor of four. Add in cuts along curved edges and borders, and a straightforward area calculation quickly needs a waste allowance layered on top. This calculator handles both steps at once.
The Formula
Paver Area = (Paver Length ÷ 12) × (Paver Width ÷ 12)
Pavers Needed = Area ÷ Paver Area
Pavers With Waste = ceiling(Pavers Needed × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100))
Paver dimensions are entered in inches and converted to feet so the resulting paver area is in square feet, matching the units of the patio or walkway area.

- Comparing paver sizes — running the same area through a few different paver dimensions shows how much unit count (and installation labor) changes with a larger-format paver.
- Border and cut allowance — edges, curves, and step-downs all require cut pavers, which is why the waste percentage exists separately from the base area calculation rather than being baked into it.

A typical waste allowance of 10% is standard practice for rectangular layouts; curved edges or complex patterns (herringbone, basket weave) often warrant 15% or more.
